Recently, the UN Human Rights Committee, the supervisory body for implementing the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, expressed concern over the dire human rights situation in Japan as some incidents occurred including the death of three foreigners who had been detained at the immigration control facilities between 2017 and 2021.
Accordingly, the Committee called upon Japan to establish an independent national institution for the promotion of human rights as early as possible and take measures to ensure that the people detained in the refugee camps receive adequate legal and medical protection.
In Japan, due to the refugee camps’ poor sanitary conditions and all sorts of contempt and maltreatment from the authorities, foreign refugees have been continuously committing suicide or dying from unknown causes for a long time.
These include a case of an unconscious Vietnamese man in his forties being left to die for hours in a refugee camp in Ibaragi, a case of an Indonesian man dying from an unknown cause after 5 days of being detained by force in a refugee camp on entering Japan to gain “refugee status”, a case of a Sri Lankan woman in her thirties dying after having long suffered severe maltreatment at the Nagoya refugee camp, and so on.
Article 3 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights stipulates that everyone has the right to life, liberty and the security of person.
Everyone wants his or her personality to be respected by others and live with equal rights.
And anyone has the right and liberty to enjoy the requirements indispensable for the human life, regardless of their living conditions or environment.
However, such basic human rights are becoming extinct and flagrantly violated in Japan.
Japan is rampant with national chauvinism of discriminating and despising other nations while putting on a show of advocating “democracy” and “law-governed state”. Therefore, it is only too natural that the international community takes issue with the human rights issue peculiar to such a country.
Japan should pay heed to the strict voice of the international community with regard to its deep-rooted national chauvinism policy.
