A memorial service was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on December 6 to mourn the death of Jiang Zemin.
Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, president of the People’s Republic of China and chairman of the Central Military Commission, attended the event along with leading officials of the party and state and representatives from all walks of life.
The participants observed a moment’s silence in memory of Jiang Zemin.
President Xi Jinping made a memorial address.
Xi in his address praised Jiang’s life and exploits, saying that his feats, ideas and traits will be cherished in the hearts of the people through generations to come.
Flags were flying at half-mast across the country.
On December 5, President Xi and other leading party and state officials visited the general hospital of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army to bid last farewell to Jiang and escorted his bier to the Babaoshan Martyrs Cemetery.
Along the route from the hospital to the cemetery, Beijing citizens paid their last respects to Jiang Zemin and expressed deep condolences over his death.
