The 250-mile journey for Korea’s liberation is the historic course the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung trekked in his teens from Mangyongdae to Badaogou with a high aim to win back his country lost to the Japanese imperialists.
The distance covers from today’s Mangyongdae, Mangyongdae District in Pyongyang, via South Phyongan, North Phyongan, Jagang and Ryanggang provinces, to Badaogou in Northeast China.
True to the instruction of his father Kim Hyong Jik, the outstanding leader of the anti-Japanese national liberation movement in Korea, Kim Il Sung made a 250-mile journey from Badaogou in March Juche 12 (1923) to his birthplace at Mangyongdae, and studied at Changdok School in Chilgol (present Chilgol-dong in Mangyongdae District). One day, he received a news that his father was arrested again by the Japanese police.
With a firm determination to embark on the road of struggle to achieve his country’s independence true to his father’s intention, young Kim Il Sung left Mangyongdae on January 22, 1925 to make another 250-mile journey back to Badaogou, travelling by train or negotiating rugged passes and virgin snow.
Thirteen days after his departure from Mangyongdae, he arrived in Phophyong, Ryanggang Province. Standing on the banks of the snow-covered Amnok River, he looked back at the mountains and rivers of his motherland with bitter grief. He made a solemn resolve that he would return to the motherland without fail after defeating the Japanese imperialist gangsters, though he left it with sorrow. Then, he sang quietly the Song of the Amnok River which had been sung among those who crossed the river, and moved his steps to the frozen river. On February 3, 1925, he arrived in Badaogou.
The journey was the sacred road of the revolution which led him to the struggle to liberate Korea (August 15, 1945).
In order to hand down his immortal exploits, his statues have been erected in several places along the course of the journey, and monuments in many other places of the country.
