Ri Song Hui who cut a conspicuous figure in weightlifting in the 1990s won three Asian championships and two world championships, renewed world records six times and achieved good results in the Olympic Games during her playing career.
Born in Tongnim County, North Phyongan Province, Ri took up weightlifting in her teens and beat world records in two events and total in her national debut, attracting the attention of experts.
Later, she triumphed in the 58kg category of the 12th Asian women’s weightlifting championships, renewed the world record in the 58kg jerk at the 13th Asian Games in 1998 and broke the world record again in the same event and won the first place in total standings at the 13th world women’s weightlifting championships in November 1999.
She surprised the world by setting a new world record once again in the jerk event and coming first in total records at the 13th Asian women’s weightlifting championships held in Japan in May 2000. She went on to establish new records at many international events including the 14th Asian Games and the 15th world women’s weightlifting championships and exalted the honour of the country with gold medals.
Ri Song Hui was awarded the titles of Labour Hero and People’s Athlete.
