Lagoon Kwang is one of large natural lakes in Korea.
It is on the coastal lowland east of the township of Jongphyong County, South Hamgyong Province.
There are low mountains and hills on the southeast shore of the lagoon, and Hamhung Plain on its north and west.
There are some islets in the lagoon. It is fringed by big and small swamps and paddy fields.
It is 4.75㎢ in area, 19.2km in circumference, 5.7km long and 0.8km wide. It is 0.6m, deep on average and 1.1m deep at the maximum. The bedrock of the area is composed of Archaeozoic gneiss covered with a thick layer of sand.
The bed of the lagoon is composed of silty and sandy soils.
The main source of its water is atmospheric precipitation, and the water flows into it in the form of rivers and groundwater.
For its rich water sources, the lagoon benefits a large-scale duck farm, freshwater fish farm and oyster farm and irrigation.
It is a natural monument of great academic value as it shows crustal oscillation, denudation and sedimentation and the distribution variance of sea and river water.
