Chollima means a horse galloping 1,000-ri a day, symbolizing fast running.
In the middle of the last century the Democratic People's Republic of Korea made a miraculous leap forward in socialist construction. The period shines as the Chollima era in the history of development of the DPRK.
In the era the Korean young people demonstrated their might as the first detachment carrying on the construction of the Haeju-Hasong Railway at the speed of Chollima.
The construction of the Haeju-Hasong Railway was a huge project. In the project they had to dispose of 880,000 cubic metres of earth and build more than 5,600 square metres of retaining walls, 38 bridges, nine railway station buildings, nine railroads, a locomotive yard and over 200 dwelling houses. It was to take at least three to four years to finish the project at that time.
The project started in early May Juche 47(1958).
The young builders made collective innovations in the course of actively conducting various movements such as the movement of exceeding 300 percent, the movement against returning empty-handed and the movement of carrying loads 100 times in an hour.
In June Juche 47(1958) the great leader Kim Il Sung called at the construction site, highly praised the young people for their achievements and encouraged them, saying they are the first detachment rushing forward in the spirit of Chollima.
Elated by his trust, the young builders completed the construction of more than 80-kilometre-long railway in 75 days through their collective innovations.
There cannot be 99 percent and 100 percent is shameful. 300 percent is not so bad and 500 percent is good. This was a working spirit of the young people who wrought miracles and performed feats in the van of the Chollim era.
The spirit of the Chollima era is firmly carried forward today, too.
A groundbreaking ceremony for a project to build a new street in the Sopho area was held in the capital city of Pyongyang in February last.
Young people are doing the important project forming a peculiar street.
The young people want to represent the era and perform merits to be registered in history. Their stamina and fighting spirit are carried forward and displayed not only by young people of the former generation but also by those of the present generation. This will be clearly proved in the building of the new street.
