50 Proud Years (1)
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the holding of the ITF Taekwon-Do world championships.
The 50-year history of the championships can be said the one of defending the ideals and purity of Taekwon-Do and creating a proud tradition of its development while surmounting all sorts of challenges and hardships.
After the end of the First ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships, the ITF sought to hold the championships regularly so as to promote the technical development of Taekwon-Do on a worldwide scale and continue to expand its ranks.
But the second, third and fourth championships were recorded as events with the smallest number of participating countries and practitioners.
Afterwards, in consideration of the world trend of growing enthusiasm of competitions among countries and regions, the ITF steadily improved the modes of competition.
It applied new regulations on organizing individual pattern event according to dan (degree), not body weight, and amended the regulations judging individual forte and power show events together, not separately.
Meanwhile, the number of events–pattern, sparring, forte and power show–was increased to five with the addition of self-defence, and the number of events of individual sparring increased from five to seven.
The ITF amended the regulations of the Third ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships, where women players were allowed only to attend individual sparring. Thus, from the fourth championships they participated in all individual events, and from the fifth championships they were allowed to attend all group and individual events just like men.
“Taekwon-Do is an exercise that helps people give full play to their abilities to defend themselves, not an exercise to train people with certain mysterious abilities. It makes the weak strong through steady training. In this context, it is quite natural for women to take part in the world championships,” says Jang Kyong Ok, Labour Hero of the DPRK and People’s Athlete, who is also vice-chair of the women’s committee of the ITF and department director of the Korean Taekwon-Do Committee.
