Chilsong Gate is the northern gate of the Walled City of Pyongyang on Moran Hill in Pyongyang.
It was built as the northern gate of the keep of the Walled City of Pyongyang during the reign of Koguryo in the mid-6th century.
Chilsong Gate means the northern gate, derived from the Great Bear, which is located in the northern sky.
It is associated with the heroic anti-aggression struggle of the ancestors.
When the Kitan aggressors invaded our country with hundreds of thousands of troops in 1010, the Koryo soldiers smashed the enemy at the Chilsong Gate. During the Imjin Patriotic War (1592-1598), when the walled city was temporarily occupied by foreign enemy, volunteers and people made an inroad into the city through the gate before others in the battle to recapture the city and won a great victory by annihilating more than 10 000 enemy troops. Thus, the people have called it the “Gate of Victory” since long ago.
Today, the Chilsong Gate is under good protection as one of the relics of national treasure value.
