The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China mentioned as follows in response to the recent claim by the U.S. administration that the National Security Law on Hong Kong and the March 2024 “Safeguarding National Security Ordinance” further erode fundamental freedoms and protection of human rights in Hong Kong and that the businesses should be aware that the risks they face in the PRC are now increasingly present in Hong Kong.
The Chinese side strongly condemns the U.S. side for its daring attempt to make groundless attack against the National Security Law on Hong Kong and smear the business environment in Hong Kong by concocting the so-called “Updated Hong Kong Business Advisory”.
After the roll-out of the National Security Law on Hong Kong and the “Safeguarding National Security Ordinance”, Hong Kong enjoys better rule of law, a more favorable business environment and more consolidated foundation for long-term prosperity and stability. Hong Kong also saw all-time high figures for the registration of both new local companies and non-Hong Kong firms in the first half of the year.
According to the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2024, Hong Kong ranks 5th globally in competitiveness. In 2023 Hong Kong was the fourth receiver of foreign direct investment worldwide.
The spokesperson concluded by demanding that the U.S. respect the sovereignty of China and the rule of law in Hong Kong and stay prudent on issues related to Hong Kong.
