Unsan County, North Phyongan Province, is named so because of its cloudy weather and surrounding mountains.
The county carries out projects for afforestation and water control one after another according to a yearly plan.
The county is giving priority to planting trees.
The county forestry management station produces many saplings by scrupulously conducting seed treatment, germination, nutritional management and pest control and conducts planting, manuring and cultivation of trees in a scientific and technological way so as to raise their survival rate.
It also plants trees in bare hillsides to check soil erosion by rainwater.
Meanwhile, the county is pushing ahead with river improvement.
To provide for unexpectedly heavy rains, it dynamically pushes waterway project on a large scale after a scientific and meticulous calculation of the highest water level to go up in case of maximum rainfall, as well as the maximum water volume, runoff speed and pressure on the embankments. In particular, it has got rid of the risk of flood damage by building strong auxiliary embankments. And it dredges rivers, while straightening or widening their winding or narrow sections.
The 300km-long river embankments built so far have remained unperturbed by this year’s record heavy rain.
Timber, wild fruits and medicinal herbs produced in the mountains serve as raw materials for the local industry. The improved rivers contribute to the agricultural development.
That's why the local people liken the efforts for afforestation and water control to tidying up their courtyards.
