Bonsai trees presented by forest lovers attracted the attention of visitors at the national plants exhibition, “Plants in DPRK-2024,” held from late September to mid-October.
Bonsai is an ornamental old-looking tree or shrub that has been kept very small by growing it in a pot while stunting its growth.
Ri Jin Ho, a resident in Kosan-dong, Taesong District, Pyongyang, presented 25 bonsais of 11 species including juniper, Cryptomeria japonica , zelkova, box, spruce and maple, all of which drew attention as they were small and yet looked old.
The 80-year-old pine was one metre tall, 50 centimetres wide and eight centimetres in diameter at root neck. Besides, other bonsais of various shapes made his booth attractive as they retained their unique characteristics and beauty. He has ten years of experience of growing bonsais. He said that a tree, however old, cannot be valued if it does not have beautiful shape and ornamental effects, but a bonsai tree, though young, is different if it looks nice.
He continued that in order to grow a nice bonsai, one must be well aware of the plant and breathe the same air with it.
Kim Chol Ho livng in Thosan-dong No. 3, Rangnang District, Pyongyang, presented nine bonsais and four tray-landscapes.
He retired three years ago and developed an interest in cultivating plants at home. In the course of this, he took an interest in bonsais and tray-landscapes. He said that he was still immature and that he had learnt a lot at the exhibition through consultations and exchanges with other cultivators.
He added that if people cultivated bonsais at workplaces and homes they could feel the freshness and beauty of nature while relishing the growth of plants and their life would be filled with rich emotions and optimism.
