Koryo celadon is a national cultural heritage item of Korea.
It is a jade-green kind of porcelain made in the period of Koryo (a feudal state which existed from 918 to 1392 in Korea).
The celadon greeted a heyday of its development in the 11th and 12th centuries. And from then on, it further developed while retaining its superiority.
Its beautiful shapes, colour and decorative patterns, high formative and artistic quality and unique techniques of manufacturing have made it regarded as a priceless treasure in contemporary times.
Its limpid, vivid, soft and subtle colour is a perfect artistic representation of the ideological feelings, hobbies and aptitudes of the Korean people who like what is refined from olden times. Its colour is so limpid and clear that it has been likened to that of the autumn sky, water running through deep valleys or jade.
For this reason, the celadon was also called Koryo jade-green celadon or Koryo green celadon. As the finest of all kinds of porcelains created during the Koryo period, it still retains its value and fame.
It is divided into various types according to the applied ornamentation techniques. Various patterns representing natural phenomena and things are depicted in a diverse way for decoration purpose.
As almost all the lines forming its shape are curves, the celadon looks slim, soft and lively.
Because the lines strongly represent the rational assertion of the artist and optimism about life, Koryo celadon is otherwise called porcelain of lines.
Koryo celadon is manufactured by applying various techniques and principles of heat engineering and its shapes, decorative patterns and jade-green colour are harmoniously combined. As such, it is considered the acme of ceramic art and enriches the cultural treasure house of mankind.
The soul and traditions of the celadon are still inherited.
