Koreans have long greatly celebrated their children’s first birthday, with particular attention paid to the preparation of the clothing for them.
The traditional clothing for the event is rainbow-coloured clothing.
The rainbow-coloured clothing, part of the traditional Korean costume, is featured by multi-coloured stripes on the sleeves and other parts of the clothing, appropriate to the childish mind.
The clothing originated from the custom by which adults tended to gather different colours of cloth or rainbow-striped cloth to make a suit for their children on their first birthday. The look and historic origin of the colourful clothes are evidenced by old mural pictures.
A picture of the Kaema tomb mural in the period of Koguryo (277 BC-AD 668) shows that a woman wears a jacket with the sleeves decorated with white, purple and red stripes.
Such clothes included outer coat and overcoat.
According to relics, the striped clothing is not necessarily decorated with seven colours. Some attire did not have such colours as green, pink and blue, while others included purple and yellow green.
Stripes were gilded or embroidered with flower patterns and characters. The clothing for winter was made of thick silk cloth.
There was a suit covered with tri-colour cloth on the sleeves and shoulder part.
The clothing was so diverse and beautiful to the liking of children.
Boys’ jackets were waist-long. Girls’ jackets were shorter and more gorgeous, and they were traditionally coupled with a crimson skirt.
Such custom still goes on. Korean children like to wear the rainbow-coloured clothing not only on holidays but on ordinary days.
