In recent years the Pomology Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Science has bred many high-yielding fruit trees, including apple, pear, peach, plum and apricot trees, which have been distributed across the country.
Since several years ago, the researchers have prepared well over 10 000 saplings with high resistance to cold on more than 10 occasions to make high-yielding fruit trees grow in all areas of the country, especially the cold zones. They have brought them to local areas and put much effort into establishing cultivation techniques suited to local conditions.
In the course of this, they have proved the superiority of the new species.
Among the good species are apple and apricot trees, whose fruits ripen ten days earlier, are much larger and have higher sugar content than the existing species, as well as plum tree highly resistant to cold and ornamental peach tree with red leaves.
Building on the achievements, the institute is working to make apple, pear, plum, grape and many other species cultivated in Samjiyon, Ryanggang Province, one of the areas with a high average altitude and the lowest temperature in the country.
