Last year, the boxing group at Pongji Senior Middle School in Pyongyang’s Phyongchon District produced two winners at the National Schoolchildren’s Games.
Jo Chon Ryong, one of the winners, thrashed all opponents in the men’s 52kg category to win a gold medal and the best player prize.
Since his kindergarten days, he preferred to watch Taekwon-Do or boxing matches on TV rather than cartoons.
When he entered a primary school, he volunteered to join the Taekwon-Do group and then the boxing group at middle school.
Although he took up boxing later than others, he trained hard to catch up with them.
After group training, he stayed in the ground to practise an assortment of punches such as straight, hook and uppercut. Back home, he further practised before a mirror.
In particular, he redoubled efforts to improve his skills in left uppercut which suits his constitutional feature of left-handedness.
Thanks to his strenuous efforts and the instructor’s exacting demand, his techniques improved over time. One year later, in 2023, he attended the then 59th national juvenile sports schools’ competition.
He beat down all opponents before he confronted his fellow from the same school in the final.
As the bout began, he remained preoccupied with fellowship which kept him from performing his forte against his group mate. This rather gave an opportunity to his opponent.
The bout ended up with the referee lifting the hand of his opponent. Chon Ryong felt ashamed and could not hold his head up.
“I taught you only boxing techniques, not sporting ethics,” the instructor said to him in agony. “Your silver medal will teach you many things. Get back up.”
Next day, when he stood on the ground, he was a different man.
He trained harder and tried his best in every training bout to get the better of his opponent by keeping offensive to the last.
He knocked out a player from Nampho by dint of his forte in the first round of the men’s 52kg semifinals at the 2024 National Schoolchildren's Games.
Chon Ryong fought the final with a player from South Hamgyong Province who had better physical conditions and rich experience. But he took the initiative and dealt continuous blows, winning the event.
After the awarding ceremony, he told his instructor that he would always keep the lesson from the silver medal in mind and do his best in every bout.
