is situated in Kunsan-ri, Thongchon County, Kangwon Province of the DPRK.
Nearly one million years ago, crustal movement took place to form a bay around the lagoon.
Over time the entrance to the bay was blocked up by a pile of sediment to form a lagoon. The annual mean temperature of the area with a comparatively mild climate and heavy rainfall is 11.5℃ and the annual precipitation is around 1 239mm.
The lagoon, 19km in circumference, 5.2km long and 0.6km wide, covers 4.84 km 2 . The surface of the lake, five metres deep, is at the same level as the sea.
The lake is surrounded by narrow yet long aggraded plains, and other lagoons of different sizes are along the coast.
The southeastern side of the lagoon is linked with Lagoon Chona by a narrow waterway.
Oak, larch, Erman’s birch, acacia and rare-shaped pine trees and sweet briers grow in and around the lagoon. It is home to various species of sea fish such as flounder, saury, herring, sandfish, dace and gizzard shad, plus freshwater fish such as snakehead, carp and trout. And Corbicula leana, scallop, Maogny clam, oyster and freshwater king crab inhabit the bottom of the lagoon.
Around the lagoon are oddly-shaped rocks such as Hyongje (brothers) Rocks, Pucho (Buddha) Rock and Wonsudae, which are associated with the legends related to the lagoon. And the mud on the lagoon bed is used for medical treatment.
The lagoon, limpid and serene, with an islet in its centre, surrounded by densely wooded hillocks and sandy beaches pink-tinted all over with blooming sweet briers, presents a beautiful landscape. Now it is a holiday resort and tourist attraction.
And Kuk Islet is located about six kilometres away from the lagoon.
