Scientists of the Laboratory of Juche-Based Iron-Making Technology under the Metal Engineering Faculty intensify their researches into sci-tech problems arising in reality.
Among them is Doctor Min Kwang Sik who has made an active contribution to the steel production with significant research findings.
He is a meritorious scientist who has devoted his all to the development of metallurgical industry of the country for decades.
In late April 2024, a sci-tech consultative meeting in the field of metallurgical industry was held at the Hwanghae Iron and Steel Complex on an important issue for iron production .
The meeting discussed the issue on a new refining technology which can replace the long-standing argon-based refining method in the metallurgical field.
The refining method based on the inert gas argon had a shortcoming of less output as compared to cost price and difficult problems in reality.
In order to solve it, Dr. Min presented a proposal concerning a new refining technology to the consultative meeting.
His proposal was to develop a new gas generating agent as effective as argon with lower costs by relying on domestic raw materials.
It was the action of carbon monoxide that controlled the content of elements when the molten iron was boiling.
But since carbon monoxide is an explosive gas, it is difficult to compress and hard to keep at low temperature. Therefore, the refining method using argon was produced.
Dr. Min continued his speculation and pursuit for a long time to find out a substance that can generate carbon monoxide in a safe and purposeful way.
In the course, he developed a unique carbon monoxide generating agent which can fully ensure the boiling time and intensity needed for refining molten iron with raw materials available in our country.
The new refining method proved its advantage through more than 10 introduction tests and provided a guarantee for bringing about a fresh change in the iron and steel production of the country.
Dr. Min Kwang Sik is working hard to make practical research findings which can further enhance the independence of the metallurgical industry.
