Chairman Kim Jong Il (February 16, 1942-December 17, 2011) lived a sacred patriotic life that was dedicated to national prosperity and people’s wellbeing.
We need patriotism by action, not by word. We should respond with action, not verbally, to the call of the country and people. This was his lifelong creed.
That is why he put his heart and soul into defending the dignity and sovereignty of the country and socialism and into building a paradise for the people.
In the late 1990s the imperialist allied forces went to great lengths to isolate and stifle the DPRK.
In the face of unprecedentedly trying ordeals, he embarked on a long march of Songun to defend national sovereignty and socialism which the Korean people regard as their own life and destiny.
During his inspection tour of a frontline post, he once put his shoulder to a wheel of his skidding car, and worked his way through rough seas to an island post. Thanks to his inspection tours of army units and efforts to build up the country’s defence capabilities, the Korean People’s Army was further strengthened in ideological, spiritual, military and technical aspects. The DPRK emerged as a military power equipped with strong offensive and defensive means, which no formidable enemy dare provoke, and its people-centred socialism was safeguarded.
Regarding the people’s demands and interests as the starting point of and sole yardstick for all his thoughts and activities, he was always on his inspection tour for the sake of the people.
Every nook and cranny of the country—industrial establishments, farms, villages, schools, hospitals, restaurants, shops, families and hostels—is associated with his affection for the people. Even on his birthdays he was on his field guidance tour for the improvement of the people’s living standards.
When officials requested him to have a rest, he used to say he would have a good rest and long sleep when the people are well-off with nothing to envy in the world.
He travelled about 670 000 kilometres to visit more than 14 290 units around the country for its prosperity and people’s happiness.
As he devoted his all always finding himself on the people-bound train, foundations of lasting value were laid for building a thriving nation.
Despite the passage of time, the Korean people’s reverence and yearning for him are unflagging.
