Professor and Doctor Ri Yu Mi is a veteran Korean costume designer and a Merited Artist.
She cherishes memories about the benevolent country which embraced her warmly and brought her beautiful hopes into full bloom.
She spent her childhood in Japan.
She liked drawing when she was little and distinguished herself as a little painter even before she was ten. Gradually, she harbored a dream to become a designer of traditional Korean costume.
However, she couldn’t realize her dream in Japan, deeply steeped in national chauvinism. It was impossible to design Korean costume there where distrust and hatred for the Korean nation prevailed.
Then, in March, 1960, Ri’s family returned to the motherland thanks to President Kim Il Sung.
The country provided the family with new jobs and a modern dwelling house for free and let all the children study free of charge, supplying them with new school uniforms and school things every year.
Ri could give full play to her hopes in the excellent education conditions which would have been impossible to wish for in Japan.
When she was at middle school, the President visited the venue of the national exhibition of art pieces by schoolchildren held at the Pyongyang Schoolchildren’s Palace and highly appreciated her Korean painting "Preventive Inoculation".
Later, she learnt to her heart’s content at Pyongyang University of Fine Arts and became a teacher after graduation.
Since then, she has bonded again with the Korean costume.
She devoted all her passion and wisdom to the development of the Korean costume for the last tens of years.
In those days, she authored 20-odd books about Korean costume and highly displayed the excellency of the nation by presenting lots of costume designs to the national and international exhibitions and presentations.
The country bestowed the honor of a Merited Artist, professor and doctor upon her though she couldn’t live even her humble dream in an alien land.
So, Ri, far past seventy, recollects her life with the Korean costume and tells her descendants that a girl, who was crying out of sorrow and misery under the alien skies, came to lead a priceless life in her motherland.
Her life teaches us that our socialist country is the one and only cradle of genuine happy life in the world that takes care of our destiny and future.
