The Jangsusan Fort in the boundary between Jaeryong and Sinwon counties in South Hwanghae Province was built in the period of Koguryo (277 BC–AD 668).
The fort is about 10.5km in circumference.
It was designed to consist of the keep and outer castle by blocking the basin and the valley with the cliff west of a pond at the bottom of a waterfall as a boundary.
The walls were erected into those with a single side or two sides by trimming the stones abundant in the mountain. The lower part of some sections was built in tiers.
The fort has six gates in all, that is, Nam (south), Puk (north) and Tong (east) gates at the outer castle, and Nam, So (west) and Puk gates at the keep.
The Nam Gate of the outer castle, the main gate of the fort, is located at a valley in the southeast corner of Mt Jangsu, where Mt Big Jangsu and Mt Small Jangsu join.
