The Retinal Treatment Department of the Ryugyong General Ophthalmic Hospital is famous for successful records.
Last year, a patient was rushed to the hospital. He was blind in the right eye and suffered from polyceasmic detachment of retina in the left eye complicated by severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
According to the conventional practice, the treatment was almost impossible.
However, chief Kim Man Sok and other medical workers of the department held several consultative meetings on operation plan.
They performed the first operation of removing proliferative membrane and applying retinopexy and then the second operation, improving his eyesight.
The department has established a Korean-style advanced operation method of vitreoretinal disease, recognized as one of the obstinate diseases in the world, thus successfully operating on patients with different clinical symptoms of the disease.
As a result, they have brought sight back to the patients who were supposed to remain blind all their life because the treatment of their diseases was regarded as almost impossible.
Whenever the patients express their gratitude, Kim Man Sok says: “The State built such a wonderful hospital and provided it with the latest medical equipment including the vision system constellation. So you should offer greetings of gratitude to the socialist system."
Up to now over 5 000 people have recovered their sight thanks to the efforts of the medical workers of the department.
