April 22 is Earth Day.
The day is annually commemorated worldwide as an important occasion for consolidating international solidarity and demonstrating support for environmental protection. The first event was held on April 22, 1970. Now a wide range of events take place including 1 billion people in more than 190 countries.
At present, the development and use of replenishable and clean sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, hydro and tidal energy have become a worldwide trend, and they offer tremendous benefits to our planet and human health.
Furthermore, as global warming persists and global ecological environmental protection comes as a pressing task facing mankind, the diversification of energy sources and remarkable reduction of hydrocarbon emissions are a prerequisite for alleviating the aftermath of climate change and for ensuring sustainable economic development.
Therefore, the Earth Day Organization has chosen “Our Power, Our Planet” as the Earth Day theme for 2025, aiming to triple global electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030.
The DPRK government has set it as an important state policy to attach importance to natural energy sources and extensively develop and use them, and pushed for its implementation.
The Eighth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea in January 2021 put forward as a major task facing the electric power industry during the new five-year plan to readjust and reinforce its production foundations as a whole and expand them on a long-term basis while waging an increased production drive for meeting the immediate demand for electricity, so as to reliably guarantee the stable development of the national economy and the material and cultured living of the people.
As a solution to carry out the task, the DPRK has built solar farms in different regions favourable for installing solar panels in terms of sunshine, land use, inclination and direction, grid integration and power consumption.
Meanwhile, national efforts are being concentrated on the construction of tidal power station, and the wide use of wind energy resources in coastal areas is under way.
Together with this, various sectors of the national economy are encouraged to adopt energy-saving technologies to increase production while minimizing energy consumption.
Amid growing public concern about the exploitation and use of renewable energy sources, the renewable energy development foundation has been established to fund the relevant service.
