Korean fighters waged an arduous 10-odd-year guerrilla war to win back their country from the Japanese imperialists, which started with the formation of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army on April 25, 1932. The story about them is not simply about a section of the past for the Korean people.
With neither state backing nor support from a regular army, the guerrillas fought an unyielding fight against Japanese imperialism obtaining everything by themselves. They armed and fed themselves by taking weapons and food from the enemy and made Yongil bombs with their bare hands to destroy the enemy. They sewed uniforms in the depths of forests, and collected medicinal herbs to treat the wounded. Their spirit of self-reliance and fortitude has become the current traits unique to the Korean people.
The anti-Japanese armed struggle was not only a war that was won against a strong enemy in spite of great scarcity, but also a war that was won by dint of firm faith, optimism about future and mass heroism.
Undaunted by those extreme hardships and ordeals, the anti-Japanese guerrillas stuck to their will to win back their country and build a new society of the working people. One of them, arrested and tortured by enemy, cut off his tongue to keep secrets, and many others remained loyal to the revolutionary principles even on the scaffold, shouting “Long live Korea’s liberation!”
They had to sleep on fallen leaves in the open even in the face of severe cold of 30-40 degrees below zero—for over a decade at that. Though they often could not but share even a single cup of parched-rice powder for a meal, they made a campfire at night and cheerfully sang and danced around it playing the harmonicas. While the enemy troops were ransacking forests in search of them, they were courageous enough to conduct months-long military and political training in forests.
They risked their lives without hesitation to save people and displayed unparalleled bravery in the battles against the enemy. The story about them is still a source of inspiration for the Korean people. Whenever faced with challenges, they find great courage and strength from the story of their forerunners. That is why their advance is so vigorous and unstoppable.
