Pyongyang, May 16 (KCNA) -- Among the precious national cultural heritages of the Korean people is the Mausoleum of King Tongmyong.
The mausoleum situated in Ryongsan-ri, Ryokpho District, Pyongyang is the tomb of King Tongmyong (B.C.298-B.C.259), the founder of Koguryo which demonstrated its might as a powerful state that existed for one thousand years in the Korean nation's history spanning 5 000 years.
The middle ages started and the feudal society appeared in Korea as Koguryo was founded by King Tongmyong.
Koguryo, with the vastest territory in the history of the Korean nation, was the powerful country which demonstrated the dignity and honor of the nation with advanced economy, culture and military muscle.
The mausoleum was transferred into the present location when Koguryo moved its capital to Pyongyang in 427.
President Kim Il Sung made sure that the mausoleum of King Tongmyong who built Koguryo, the first feudal state in the history of the Korean nation, was unearthed and its character was scientifically interpreted. He also initiated the reconstruction of the mausoleum and wisely led it.
Looking round the mausoleum successfully rebuilt on May 16, 1993, he expressed satisfaction over the fact that the mausoleum was rebuilt to represent the phases of the times of Koguryo on the principle of historicism. He stressed the need to preserve and manage historical remains and relics well and show the wisdom and talents of the ancestors who had created a long history and culture to the people through actual objects.
The mausoleum consists of the tomb supported by more than 160 platforms, the image of King Tongmyong, over 30 stone sculptures, dozens of fine art pieces showing the fortitude and customs of the Koguryo people and the Jongrung Temple and other structures peculiar to the nation.
In front of the gate of the mausoleum is the "Monument to the Reconstruction of the Mausoleum of King Tongmyong", inscribed with letters written by the President.
The Mausoleum of King Tongmyong was registered as a world cultural heritage in July 2004. -0-
