The Mundok Migratory Bird Reserve, one of the major wetlands in the DPRK, serves as a crucial stopover and wintering place for waterbirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Network.
The reserve sprawls over a vast stretch of the mouth of the Chongchon River covering Ryongo-ri, Tongnim-ri and Soho Workers’ District in Mundok County, South Phyongan Province.
It was designated as a national migratory bird reserve in 1995 for its important role in protecting migratory birds (waterbirds) in the DPRK and across the world, and it was inscribed on the list of wetlands of international importance (Ramsar Site) in 2018 as the first of its kind in the country.
The Biodiversity Institute of the State Academy of Sciences has conducted surveys every year on four occasions such as wintering, springtime migration, breeding and migration in autumn since it was chosen as a Ramsar Site. The surveys have generally reviewed the distribution of waterbirds to assess the value of the reserve according to the Ramsar standards.
During the surveys, over 120 000 waterbirds of 13 families and at least 90 species have been observed. Among them, those belonging to wild goose-duck family form the most abundant resource with over 70 000 of more than 20 species, and those belonging to the snipe family are the largest in the species rate. This shows that the two families inhabit the area in relatively great numbers and, in particular, the reserve provides a very good habitat to snipes.
The surveys have also ascertained 13 globally-endangered species and waterbirds of 10 species, a figure occupying more than one percent of their population in the region or across the globe.
Researchers observed that the reserve keeps fully complying with the Ramsar standards and putting the reserve under good protection is of great significance in preserving the habitat for the waterbirds and biodiversity.
