The Nampho municipal recycling station is playing a big part in regional development.
It owes much to Ri Myong Chol, head of the station.
Several years ago, he could not take his eyes off a damaged section of a road in the city.
The roads in the port city play an important role in the country’s economic development.
Ri decided to do something to help improve the roads which can be called the face of the country.
He set out to reuse the waste from the ships at Nampho Port to make a paving material.
Unfamiliar as the research was to him, he delved into relevant fields such as chemistry and mechanical engineering and ensured that necessary equipment was made by the station’s own efforts.
After a series of experiments, the station succeeded in developing a paving material that meets the national standards.
On this basis, it built a production line.
Last year the recycled material was used for a paving project in the city.
With no use of imported material, the cost of the project was greatly reduced. Different sections of the road in downtown city were facelifted.
Years-long efforts paid off at last.
Later, Ri Myong Chol came up with a series of ideas to improve the quality of the material, and recently developed a more profitable one relying on new raw materials.
In a bid to make his station take the lead in the national drive for recycling, he has worked out a long-term plan for the development of science and technology and is building up the station’s own technical force.
This year, too, the station has produced plenty of the paving material for road improvement projects in the city.
