The 2025 Bowling Tournament took place at the Pyongyang Gold Lane on February 3-5, in which the bowlers gave full play to their skills in the men’s and women’s individuals, doubles and masters.
Record in Continuous Strikes
Ham Hyon Chol, a bowler from the Pyongyang Bowling Club, recorded 298 points by rolling nine strikes in a row in the last leg of the doubles. He has achieved a perfect game of 300 points in different competitions such as the masters finals of the 2017 Jonsung Cup Bowling Tournament.
According to the head coach of the club, Ham, a left-hander, possesses high techniques especially in balancing, ball throwing and delivery.
As a child Ham ran fast and had a good sense of ball, and took up football at the Hyongjesan District Extracurricular Sports School in Pyongyang. At 17 he switched to bowling with an attachment to the game. He focused on increasing the rate of strikes in keeping with the world trend, thus enhancing his skills onto a higher level.
During his 10-odd-year career Ham has achieved good results in international and national competitions, and he was awarded the title of the Master of Sport of the DPRK in 2020.
Promising Rookie
Pak Hyon Ju from the same club took the first place in all women’s events at the recent competition. She started bowling only a few years ago. She was born and grew up in Tongnim County, North Phyongan Province. Influenced by her sports-enthusiastic parent, she began to learn volleyball at the local extracurricular sports school.
For her unusual kinesthetic sense, she was talent-spotted for bowling. In fact, it was not easy for her, accustomed to the volleyball, to handle the bowling ball that weighs up to 7 kg. However, she made painstaking efforts, and won national events.
At the recent competition, too, she advanced to the finals and rolled eight straight strikes with 268 points, an overwhelmingly winning score that was higher than her previous masters record by more than 20 points.
