Geological sites in the Mt Paektu area designated as a global geopark include Jong Il Peak. The imposing and wonderfully-shaped peak soars 1 798m above sea level on the shore of the Sobaek Stream.
It had been called Jangsu until it was renamed so as it is situated beside the birthplace of Chairman Kim Jong Il (February 16, 1942-December 17, 2011) in the Paektusan Secret Camp. The altitude of the peak from the birthplace is about 200 metres.
The rock body of the peak is a lava tower created in the wake of the eruption of highly viscous trachyte magmas about 2 million years ago, which rose slowly and cooled down. The hornito was formed as its surrounding rocks were denuded. In the volcano erupted long ago the volcanic body falls off under the influence of glaciation and erosion to reveal its lip partially or wholly.
The face of the peak, about 100 metres high, is a cliff which is 50 metres wide in the upper part and 80 metres wide in the lower part. Its northern side declines gently to be linked with Saja Peak.
One of the scenic spots unique to the volcanic group of Mt Kanbaek, the peak is the largest lava tower in the Paektu Volcanic Zone. As this kind of volcanic body belonging to the Quaternary of the Cenozoic era is rare to be found worldwide, it is a geological site of great international significance.
