Successes have been achieved in the work to improve the country’s irrigation system.
Relevant officials and working people across the country have made devoted efforts to this end, in the course of which they have built or repaired over 1 300 pumping stations and over 1 100 irrigation structures and repaired a total of over 17 000 kilometres of waterways as planned for this year, thereby completing irrigation projects for more than 160 000 hectares of paddy fields and converting over 3 300 hectares of non-paddy fields into paddy ones.
South Hwanghae Province, the country’s major breadbasket, mobilized various kinds of equipment and machines for the removal of overburden, construction of embankments and concrete tapping in the projects for further improving the water-passing capacities of the Lake Jangsu-Ongjin Waterway, Kangnyong Waterway, Lake Pongchon-Chongdan Waterway and Lake Kuam Waterway.
South Phyongan Province pushed ahead with the projects for repairing the Kaechon-Lake Thaesong Waterway and Phyongnam Irrigation Waterway and carried out its assignments by March.
North Phyongan Province has repaired the sluice gates of Taegyedo tideland and built 10 pumping stations in the terminals of the first and second stages of Honggondo tideland, ensuring a sufficient supply of water to water-deficient paddy fields.
North Hwanghae Province reinforced the bed of the Miru Plain Waterway with concrete and pushed ahead with other projects for readjusting and reinforcing irrigation facilities, building and repairing a total of over 100 irrigation structures ahead of schedule.
Nampho Municipality, by applying advanced methods, built and repaired over 200 pumping stations.
