Days ago, a national open Korean chess competition took place at the Taekwon-Do Palace in Pyongyang, the capital city of the DPRK.
The competition, divided into junior, amateur and open categories, brought together men, women players and amateurs selected from all the provinces. Unlike the past events, the current competition was held in disregard of age and grade. So the competition was fiercer than ever before.
The juniors’ and amateurs’ events were spectacular, but the open event was more breath-taking.
The open event brought together the players and amateurs who had proved successful in recent games, as well as the players who had ranked up to top 16 in the first-grade event of the amateur category of the current competition.
The players of Pyongyang municipal and South Phyongan provincial teams advanced to the semi-finals after fierce competition.
As two players from each team were to compete, the finals would be as good as a match between the Pyongyang municipal team and the South Phyongan provincial team.
Pak Yu Gang of the Pyongyang municipal team and Ryu Pong Ryong of the South Phyongan provincial team advanced to the finals.
While building up a perfect defensive position and making full preparations for switchover to attack, the two players carefully worked out every move to create a favourable situation.
The situation developed unfavourably for the player of the Pyongyang municipal team in the last stage. But with brave movements he turned the situation in his favour, thus fully demonstrating his ability.
As a result, in the finals, Pak Yu Gang became the winner of the open category.
The Pyongyang municipal team took the first place in the team event of the open category as well.
The Korean chess, which has been handed down from olden times, is gaining popularity in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and chess aces are produced at national competitions held every year.
