President Kim Il Sung (1912-1994) was an iron-willed brilliant commander who defeated two imperialist powers in his generation.
It was in 1926 that he declared confrontation with imperialism for the first time. At that time he was in his teens.
Around that time the Japanese imperialists, who had occupied Korea by force of arms, violated the sovereignty of the Korean people and resorted to unprecedented colonial suppression and plunder.
They established the colonial ruling machinery, gendarmerie and police institutions, deprived the Korean people of their elementary rights and freedom and arrested, imprisoned and killed innocent people.
A typical example was the armed suppression of the June 10th Independence Movement of the Korean people in June 1926.
Witnessing the atrocities committed by the Japanese aggressors under the signboard of the crafty “civil government,” Kim Il Sung clearly realized that they were the most heinous stranglers of the freedom and dignity of the Korean people and the vicious exploiters and plunderers who subjected them to poverty and hunger.
Similarly, owing to the colonial policies of the United States and some other imperialist powers, the peoples of dozens of countries were groaning under the same plight as the Korean people.
The prevailing situation showed that all the imperialists on the earth including the Japanese imperialists were the root cause of all sorts of misfortunes and pains suffered by the oppressed colonial people and their sworn enemies.
This made him conclude that it would be impossible to think about the free development of any nation and the happiness of the oppressed working masses without overthrowing imperialism. Proceeding from this conclusion, he formed the Down-with-Imperialism Union (DIU) at Huadian of China on October 17, 1926.
In his report Let Us Overthrow Imperialism delivered at its inauguration meeting, he set it as the immediate task of the DIU to defeat Japanese imperialism and achieve the liberation and independence of Korea, and as its final objective to build socialism and communism in Korea and, further, destroy all imperialism and build communism throughout the world.
The formation of the DIU was the proclamation of a decisive battle to overthrow Japanese imperialism and the declaration of a showdown with all the imperialist forces throughout the earth.
