There is a forest of metasequoia over thousands of square metres in the Central Botanical Garden at the foot of Mt Taesong in the capital city of Pyongyang.
The giant trees, all soaring well over 30 metres tall, boast their imposing beauty.
Their propagation in the DPRK dates back to the early 1960s.
During the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950–July 27, 1953) the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung was presented with a sapling of the tree from a foreign country. He raised it in a pot with utmost care. After the war he met some officials concerned to give them detailed instructions on cultivating and propagating the tree and urge them to multiply it on a large scale.
The botanists, by applying a cutting, increased the number of the trees every year―10 in the first year and 1 000 in the following year―and sent them to different parts of the country.
Those in the Central Botanical Garden are the first batch of the tree.
The workers at the garden continued to propagate the tree by applying the methods of cutting and seed propagation. Now the propagated trees are estimated at a hundred million.
The trees are now found in many places in the country―streets, villages, educational institutions and industrial establishments.
