The Socialist Women’s Union of Korea, the mass-based political organization of women in the DPRK, was founded on November 18, 1945.
Soon after the country’s liberation from Japan’s military occupation, the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung put forward the policy of organizing a women’s union in consideration of the role of women in building a new society and the specific situation of the women’s movement and wisely led the effort to implement it.
In his speech delivered to the military and political cadres of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army on August 20, 1945, he said: To unite and organize the women, who account for half of the entire membership of our society, is important in expanding and strengthening the revolutionary forces and accelerating the construction of a new, prosperous state. We must organize a women’s union that would embrace the broad sections of working women.
On October 25 that year he, in his lecture The Present Internal and International Situation and the Tasks of Women given to women officials in Pyongyang, stressed once again the need to promote the founding of a mass-based democratic organization of women.
Under his wise guidance adequate preparations were made to found the women’s union with the formation of basic organizations embracing women workers and peasants and other broad sections of women. On the basis of such preparations, the inaugural congress of the Democratic Women’s Union was held in Pyongyang on November 18.
The meeting attended by the representatives of the women’s union organizations in all provinces heard the report on their organizational work of the provincial women’s union organizations, and then decided on forming the Democratic Women’s Union and proclaimed its birth.
After its founding, the union rapidly expanded its affiliated organizations across the country.
With the founding of the union, the Korean women, who accounted for half of the population, could participate in socio-political life with their political organization and contribute to strengthening solidarity with the world’s progressive women and promoting the international women’s movement to defend independence.
Today the Socialist Women’s Union of Korea, the successor to the Democratic Women’s Union, is creditably fulfilling its mission as a working people’s organization which trains all its members to be ardent revolutionaries and patriots who devote themselves to socialist patriotic work.
