Shortly ago a staff reporter visited Samjiyon, one of the tourist destinations of the DPRK.
The modern mountainous city is divided chiefly into Potnamu, Motka, Milyong, Chongbong and Pegaebong streets and surrounded by primeval forests and mountains. In recent years the region has been changing into an all-season tourist resort where apartment houses of different storeys, public catering facilities and neighbourhood-serving amenities are organically combined and all architectural elements are in perfect harmony.
According to a local official, the city boasts an adequate number of modern boarding and catering facilities for tourists and other visitors. It provides them with various opportunities such as sightseeing, spa bathing and skating.
The tour course starts with climbing up to the pavilion on Pegae Hill rising 1 621 metres above sea level.
A guide at the Samjiyon Travel Company said that it is fairly impressive to look down at the city while going up by cable car installed beside the ski run on the peak.
The staff reporter also visited the Milyong Hotel where Paektusan Milyong Hot Spring is located. The hot spring is effective for the treatment of digestive, skin and other diseases. Oral use of the mineral water is incredibly good for treating cardiovascular and urinary disorders and chronic hepatitis.
Both in and outside the hotel are spa bath facilities. Visitors can boil eggs by using the hot water and roast potatoes over fire set on by themselves.
The ice hockey gymnasium of the Paektusan area sports village, general recreation hall, fatigue-relieving centre and other facilities offer the visitors opportunities to spend their leisure time with skating and amusement games and taste local specialties such as starch noodles, doughnuts and tea made with potatoes at the public catering facilities.
On the itinerary there are also travel to Lake Chon on the summit of Mt Paektu and Rimyongsu Falls, which helps the visitors experience local climate and ecosystem among others.
Seeing the local people enjoying the new life of socialist civilization to their heart’s content at the resort in ideal harmony with the nature of Paektu, the reporter left the city.
