Established on November 10, 1945, the Kim Jong Thae Electric Locomotive Complex is a leading rolling stock producer and a parent enterprise in the railway transport industry of the DPRK.
The complex got its start as the then Pyongyang Railway Factory after Korea was liberated on August 15, 1945. At that time, it made efforts to rehabilitate railways destroyed by the Japanese imperialists and ensure transport as early as possible.
In the period of the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953), it played its part in the movement for supporting the front by repairing a large number of wagons and locomotives, thus contributing to victory in the war.
In the early 1960s, it successfully manufactured Pulgungi -1, the first domestic electric locomotive, by making at least 188 000 parts of more than 14 000 kinds in a little over a year.
Entering the new century, it produced an impulse-controlled electric locomotive and a four-axle AC locomotive. And it manufactured a Korean-style metro car in 2015 and went on to develop and produce updated versions Nos. 2 and 3, followed by a six-axle AC locomotive and others, thus rendering great service to railway modernization.
In recent years, the complex has built a combustion model-based castings production line, and equipped itself with scores of equipment pieces and jigs to expand its capacity for manufacturing and repairing locomotives, with the result that it has laid a sound foundation for the qualitative and quantitative growth of products.
The complex has been awarded Order of Kim Il Sung and produced many winners of the Party and state commendations.
Today it is pushing ahead with the efforts to meet the growing demand of the national economy for transport and speed up railway modernization.
