Last year, a man who sustained multiple injuries in an accident was admitted to Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences Hospital.
The injuries in different parts of the body, especially the worsening conditions of his arm, greatly disappointed the patient himself, but this did not prevent O Hyon Gyong, the nurse in charge, from making efforts.
She was always with the patient to assure him of recovery. With profound medical knowledge and high standards of nursing, she explained in detail about his conditions and took warm care of him, giving him encouragement and warmth. In this way, she made the patient set to treatment with confidence. Through the intensive treatment by the medical team and the positive cooperation of the patient he could recover in six months.
In the DPRK, there are many such nurses who can read the patients’ mind before their diseases and devote themselves to the patients.
Systematic education is given at schools for nurses across the country.
Titles of merit are awarded to the midwives and nurses who have rendered distinguished services in their jobs for over a decade in the field, and the Kim Il Sung - Kim Jong Il Annual Allowance granted to those who have achieved amazing nursing feats for over two decades. These women are socially respected and preferentially treated.
Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences Hospital alone boasts about 80 awardees of the Kim Il Sung - Kim Jong Il Annual Allowance, including Hong Sun Yong, chief nurse of the hospital.
Thanks to the efforts of such nurses, patients always feel calm and receive treatment at ease in the DPRK.
On the occasion of May 12 International Nurses Day, greetings of thanks and bouquets of congratulations go to the nurses throughout the country.
