The botanical institute of the State Academy of Sciences in the DPRK has recently established a red oak cultivation technique that helps turn useless shrubbery widely distributed in the mountains of the country into forests of oil-bearing trees easily and quickly.
This technique has opened up prospects for many cities and counties to solve the edible oil problem by themselves.
Red oak is a deciduous broadleaf tree belonging to the family of oak of Fagaceae Prantl . The tree grows the fastest among the same family species, with its average yearly growth rate at over 70cm, and it has strong adaptability to the soil and high reproducibility. For this reason, it is regarded as a good species for forest improvement.
The fruit (acorn) of the tree weighs much heavier in per unit than that of ordinary oak or overcup oak, and contains much oil, hence it is called “oily acorn.”
Scores of kilograms of oil can be extracted from one ton of fruits. Residues can be used to make ethyl alcohol and the remnants can be used as fodder. Wood is good timber for furniture production.
Through years of efforts the scientists of the institute successfully worked on a project to directly graft buds or branchlets of red oak on overcup oak, Mongolian oak and other oak family shrubs.
Drawing on this success, a campaign is under way to transform shrubbery in North Hwanghae, South Hwanghae and other provinces. The scope of the transformation is expanding further for its low investment and high economic value.
