In the DPRK there are 24 seasonal subdivisions of the year, two of which are in June: Mangjong and Haji .
Mangjong , the ninth of the 24 seasonal subdivisions, usually falls on the 6th or 7th by the solar calendar, followed by Haji on the 21st or 22nd.
Mangjong refers to the period for barley harvest and rice transplantation.
Around this period it often rains, so it is needed to gather wheat and barley in a short period of time lest the crops get rotten. For this reason, the locals reaped the crops before the day came.
Haji is the day when the daytime is the longest and the nighttime is the shortest in the year. It is also a very important point for the year’s farming.
Farmers finished off rice transplanting before the day at the latest, believing that this would result in a good harvest.
In June Koreans made various kinds of dishes according to the seasonal change.
As edible herbs thrive and vegetables are harvested in the month, they used the herbs and vegetables for making dishes.
Rice-and-mugwort cake was a typical food the locals had in almost all parts of the country around Haji.
This year Mangjong and Haji fall on the 6th and 21st respectively.
