There is a tomb with a strange name in Kyoto, Japan. It is referred to as the “nose tomb.”
The tomb is a good reminder of what Japanese committed against Koreans during the Imjin Patriotic War (1592－1598), a war waged by Koreans against Japanese invaders.
The tomb built in September 1597 reportedly houses 214 752 human noses.
The Japanese who had long made preparations for invading Korea raided the latter on April 13, 1592 by mobilizing huge forces.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the mastermind behind the invasion of Korea, issued a seven-point proclamation ordering his soldiers to behead all foreigners, young and old, men and women or even monks, and send their heads to Japan so that a tomb of heads could be built. Later, the heads were replaced by ears or noses as the former is heavier than the latter.
He ordered: “Man has two ears and a nose. So cut off the nose from the Koreans, instead of heads. Each soldier is allowed to capture a Korean alive only after he cut off one doe (Korean unit of measurement equivalent to some 0.476 gallons) of Koreans’ noses.”
Accordingly, the Japanese troops were hell-bent on killing Koreans.
To perform distinguished “feats” they massacred local people, be they men or women, old and young, to gather their noses, which were sent to the officer in charge of the gathering of noses. And they even cut off the noses from people alive.
After losing the war, Japan built a tomb of noses in a bid to cover up their defeat, show off their “war feats” and promote propaganda for their wild ambition of overseas invasion.
Afterwards, Japan inflicted untold misfortune and sufferings on the Korean people during its 40-year military occupation of Korea in the 20th century.
Instead of apologizing and making reparations for this sinful past, Japan is sharpening the sword of overseas invasion to repeat the past.
The tomb of noses in Japan is testament to the viciousness, barbarity and wild ambition of the descendants of samurais which will remain unchanged forever.
