A DPRK delegation made an economic study tour of Indonesia between June 13 and 19 as part of the planned activities of the DPRK-Canada Knowledge Partnership Programme at UBC.

The touring group included the chairman of the Korean Economic Development Association, scholars at Kim Il Sung University and the University of National Economy and officials of the Ministry of External Economic Relations and other related sectors.

During its stay the group members looked round successful economic, trade and financial development projects in Indonesia and visited economic zones.

They also met and talked with Indonesian economists and local officials.

“Pyongyang-based Indonesian embassy rendered appropriate assistance for the tour,” said Professor Park Kyung Ae at the University of British Columbia in Canada. The Programme was set up at the university to promote economic exchange with the DPRK. Prof. Park, expert on the DPRK affairs and sponsor of nongovernmental diplomatic affairs between the two countries, is the director of the Programme.

The Programme has arranged six-month intensive training courses at UBC for six DPRK economic, management, trade and financial experts annually since 2011.

As part of its activities the Programme sponsored conferences on two occasions in Pyongyang, in October 2013 and May 2014, in which participants shared a wide range of information and experience, especially on the world trend of SEZ development and its administration and management.

It also organized a field tour of economic development zones in the DPRK in April 2014.

The two conferences drew some 20 experts on SEZ and economic development from seven nations and over 200 Korean economic experts and scholars, SEZ experts and officials concerned. Participants shared knowledge and information about the planning, development, administration, management and growth of SEZ at the conferences.

The Indonesia tour provided the Korean SEZ experts with a window of opportunity to combine what they have learned at conferences and training courses with practical experience in reality.
