Eight scenic spots in Kwanso area

Kwanso means the west of Chol Pass standing between Kosan and Hoeyang counties in Kangwon Province. It covers Pyongyang, North and South Phyongan provinces and some parts of Jagang Province.

The eight beauty spots are Ryongwang Pavilion in Pyongyang, Kangson Pavilion in Songchon, Paeksang Pavilion in Anju, Yaksandongdae in Nyongbyon, Tongnim Falls in Tongnim, Thonggun Pavilion in Uiju, Inphung Pavilion in Kanggye and Segom Pavilion of Manpho.

Each of them has its own specific features generally representing the scene of cliffs by a large river.

Noted for the superb scenery around it from olden times, it goes well with the modern structures in the environs.

Kangson Pavilion took its name from a legend that the fairies of heaven were so fascinated by the scenery that they would descend by a five-coloured rainbow to have a bath in the clear water of the Piryu River.

As it commanded an extensive view of 12 beautiful peaks on Mt Holgol, it was used as a banqueting place for foreign guests in the past.

Paeksang Pavilion was named thus in the meaning that it commands a hundred good scenes. It stands at the site of the general’s terrace in old Anju Castle in Anju, South Phyongan Province.

Standing on a high hill overlooking the Chongchon River to blend in well with the natural scenery, it has been regarded as the “best pavilion in the Kwanso area”.

The hill covered with azalea blossoms presents so superb view that it is chronicled by the popular Korean folk song Ballad of Phyongbuk Nyongbyon.

Tongnim Falls is only five metres high, but the current is swift and dynamic and so a legend has it that a hunchback had his back straightened under the waterfall. And as its water is as crystal as gem, it was also called a “gem falls”.

Thonggun Pavilion in Uiju was the northern terrace of Uiju Castle which was used as a military command post and Inphung Pavilion in Kanggye was the northwestern terrace of the walled town of Kanggye which was used for training and reviewing troops.

Segom Pavilion was built on a cliff facing the Amnok River to honour victorious battles against foreign invaders. It is said that the soldiers washed their bloody swords in the water of the river after annihilating the enemy troops.
