West Coast Exchange, North Korea Watcher Conference, Sept. 2026

Another epic of human love has been produced in the DPRK to grasp the hearts of the people.

Ten badly-burned coal miners of the Soksong Coal Mine of the Myongchon Area Coal-mining Complex recovered their health after 50-odd days of hospitalization at the Pyongyang Medical College Hospital of Kim Il Sung University, thanks to the sincere devotion of the medical workers.

As soon as he was informed that the coal miners at the northern coalfield far away from Pyongyang were at the brink of death in June, supreme leader Kim Jong Un took the measure to airlift them all to the hospital.

When they arrived at the hospital, they were in a critical condition for second- or third-degree burns over 50 percent of their bodies, anasarca and burn poisoning.

A powerful treatment team was formed, hundreds of consultative meetings were held and intensive care was given.

Doctors and nurses in charge threw themselves to the treatment and care of the patients, always staying at their bedside.

In those days, officials and employees of many institutions and enterprises, to say nothing of the hospital, devoted everything to the resuscitation and recovery of the patients as they would do to their family members though they were strangers.

On August 13, the ten recovered miners left the hospital receiving a warm send-off from the medical workers.

They said in gratitude that they could never forget those days in Pyongyang all their lives.

“Our society is the world for the working class. The Party and government regard the treatment of ordinary workers as their important affair and doctors and nurses take good care of them like their brothers and sisters by blood,” said coal miner Chon Nam Chol.

“Our Party which serves the people is the best and our socialist system which puts working people forward as masters of the country is also the best in the world. I will always remember the unlimited benevolence shown by the Party and hand it down through generations. And I will work harder for the grateful motherland,” said another hewer Kwon Kwang Myong.
