The second-stage project for the reclamation of the Honggondo tideland is progressing apace.
It is a gigantic nature-harnessing undertaking to acquire huge areas of farm land by building a dozens-of-kilometres-long dyke across the waters between Sonchon and Tongnim counties, North Phyongan Province.
The bottom of the waters off Honggon Island in the north of the West Sea of Korea is flat and so the depth of water is shallow. Once reclaimed, the tideland is expected to bring economic benefits as it has abundant water resources and most of the tideland soil consists of mud rich in organic substances.
After bringing thousands of hectares under cultivation by winding up the first-stage project last year, the Tideland Reclamation Complex of North Phyongan Province reclaimed nearly another thousand hectares around Sinmi Island between November last year and May this year.
It is now working to secure thousands of hectares of arable land in the waters around Jop Island.
Diverse reclamation methods are positively applied to speed up the project.
Paddy rice grows in the reclaimed land and shallow-sea culture is avaliable in favour of the protection of dyke.
Preparations for building facilities and improving the quality of the new land are also under way. The completion of the second-stage project will lead to a new farm and villages coming into being.
Builders are pushing ahead with the project to finish it within the period of the five-year strategy for national economic development.
