was built in August 1960 on the picturesque Taedong River in Pyongyang in a year and a half to fully demonstrate the excellent architecture of our nation.
The theatre is a masterwork of the age of the Workers’ Party of Korea, national in form and socialist in content. It is a center for the cultural and emotional lives of our people and Juche-oriented performing arts.
During the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953) President Kim Il Sung had already believed that our country would win it and shaped its future. He personally unfolded a blueprint for the postwar rehabilitation and construction on an operational plan-designing table at his supreme headquarters and inspected it. Meantime, he mapped out a far-seeing plan for building a superb theatre of Korean style in the center of Pyongyang. After the war he personally chose its site and gave detailed advices on its plan and construction.
He visited the construction site of the theatre for firsthand leadership many times and said that it should be built well into a monumental edifice of the era of the WPK to meet the demand of the people and suit their convenience. He went the length of naming it the Pyongyang Grand Theatre.
The Pyongyang Grand Theatre was consequently built into a great center of the flourishing Juche art and an excellent center for the cultural and emotional lives of our people.
True to Kim Il Sung’s idea of the Juche art Chairman Kim Jong Il did all he could to develop the theater further into a swell monumental edifice in the 21st century, too. It has now been rebuilt splendidly to contribute actively to the cultural and emotional lives of our people.
