Pyongyang, February 27 (KCNA) -- The harvest of kelp, which is good for human health and longevity, is now in full swing at offshore farms along the east and west coasts of the DPRK.

The history of kelp culture in the country began under the wise guidance of President Kim Il Sung who had worked heart and soul for the improvement of people's diet.

In November Juche 47 (1958), the President sent kelp seeds to an offshore farm under construction in the seaside of South Hwanghae Province and guided the work to perfect its cultivation method.

The farm had a poor harvest of kelp per hectare at first. Acquainting himself with the fact, he saw to it that the farm deepened the study of kelp, saying that its breeding is science.

True to his teachings, culturists and technicians of the farm sharply raised the kelp output per hectare by introducing the method of summer seedling cultivation. The length of a piece of kelp was 7 meters to the maximum and its weight 1.8 kilograms.

The President also set the target of annual kelp production to be hit by the province and provided with equipment and materials necessary for breeding the summer kelp seedlings.

Since then, the kelp cultivation began in the country.

Nowadays, offshore farms in the province are gathering hundreds of tons of kelp every day. -0-
