Pyongyang, April 7 (KCNA) -- Citizens in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have learnt to their hearts' content in the study-while-working higher educational system run at the state expense.
The credit for this superior educational system goes to the wise guidance of President Kim Il Sung.
During the Fatherland Liberation War (1950-1953), the President set forth a unique policy on establishing factory colleges to train technical personnel and took steps to recall teachers from battlefields and ensure the educational conditions. After all, the first factory college came into being in the country on July 15, Juche 40 (1951).
Thanks to his noble intention, the first fishermen's college was established in Sinpho in December 1979 and the first farmers' college in Chongsan-ri in November 1981. And the number of factory colleges reached nearly 100 in the 1980s.
Over the past years, the above-said colleges have produced numbers of technicians and their graduates and students presented hundreds of thousands of technical innovations and inventions.
Before the liberation of Korea, illiteracy stood at 80 percent of its population. But the number of intellectuals in the country, who got regular and study-while-working higher education, ran up to one million in 1975 and early in the 1990s one person per six working people was a technician or an expert.
The study-while-working higher educational system, established by the President and developed by Chairman Kim Jong Il, is now fully displaying its great vitality in making all the people well versed in science and technology under the guidance of Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un.
