S. Korean public launches movement for probe into truth behind Kwangju massacre

South Koreans from all walks of life strongly demand to find the truth about the May 18 Kwangju massacre and punish those responsible for it.
The May 18 Council of Bereaved Families of Men of Merits for Democracy and other organizations expressed their will to probe into the massacre committed by the Chun Doo Hwan military fascist clique that plunged Kwangju into a bloodbath and surely punish it.
The organizations related to May 18 Kwangju Popular Uprising decided to transfer the bust of Chun Doo Hwan at the Kwanghwamun Plaza in Seoul to the plaza in front of the old South Jolla provincial office in Kwangju and continue the movement for the punishment of him.
Reporting on the May 18 Kwangju Popular Uprising 40 years ago, the murderous quelling operation by the Chun Doo Hwan clique and terrible scene of massacre, Yonhap News, Kyunghyang Daily News and other media outlets said the chief culprit should be found out without fail.
With the movement of organizations from all parts of society to sweep away the ultra-right conservatives, who denounce the Kwangju Popular Uprising as a revolt and the victims as “monsters created by the north-following leftists, gaining momentum, the majority of the south Korean public in an opinion poll on the introduction of a punitive law against the distortion of the May 18 history agreed with the adoption of a law to punish those who distort the history and spirit of May 18 Kwangju Popular Uprising.
Thanks to the efforts and solidarity movement of the broad segments of society, documents revealing the truth of May 18 Kwangju massacre committed by Chun Doo Hwan are made public one after another.
The fact-finding committee of the May 18 Kwangju massacre formally declared the launch of a movement for probing into its truth and entered into the full-scale investigation into group firing, massacre and history distortion and fabrication.
A campaign was undertaken in North Chungchong Province to remove the busts of Chun Doo Hwan and Roh Tae Woo under the sponsorship of the North Chungchong Provincial Society for Commemorating May 18 Popular Resistance.
