Japan’s Plundering of Korean Cultural Assets through Evil Laws

Cultural Assets through Evil Laws

The Japanese imperialists, who militarily occupied Korea in the early last century, fabricated various evil laws to plunder a large number of its cultural assets.

They promulgated the “regulations of managing assets of local Confucian schools” in April 1910 and a “temple ordinance” in June next year. The “ordinance” had such brigandish and impudent contents that all kinds of articles kept in the Buddhist temples should be investigated in detail to present their lists to the governor-general of Korea, and that they could not be disposed of without his permission. After its promulgation, not only the Buddhist monks and ordinary believers in Buddhism but other people opposed it. In July 1916, the Japanese imperialists cooked up the “regulations of preserving historical sites and remains” in an attempt to perfect comprehensive legal grounds for supporting their criminal investigations and plundering.

They destroyed and plundered the cultural assets of Korea under a “plan of surveying historical sites” and a pretext of “academic investigation”, with the result that it was hard to see undamaged ancient tombs in Korea in the late 1920s.

In August 1933, they forged the “ordinance on preserving treasures, historical sites, scenic spots and natural monuments of Korea” in a bid to further consolidate the authority of the governor-general of Korea over the previous regulations and the role of the Japanese police.

From the late 1930s to the early 1940s, they mercilessly suppressed any sign of patriotism in Korea and blew up or destroyed those cultural relics of inspiring the national character by fabricating an “ordinance on destruction of historical relics”. They went so far to plunder and destroy precious cultural assets under the cloak of “delivery”.

As seen above, the plundering of cultural assets of Korea committed by the Japanese imperialists by means of various evil laws is, from A to Z, a hideous inhuman crime aimed at obliterating the excellent traditions of the Korean nation.
