The Pyongyang Kim Jong Suk Silk Mill on the banks of the Taedong River has a hostel, the pride of workers at the mill.
The hostel has bedrooms, a mess hall, birthday dining hall, sports and amusement hall and others for affording convenience in the everyday life of women workers.
The cosy rooms covered with light pink and cream coloured wallpapers and the thin summer quilts on the soft beds relieve their fatigue after day’s work, while a variety of cosmetics on the mirror stand always make girl hostellers look pretty, according to the hostellers.
The hostel is equipped with a geothermal heating system.
The inmates sing that the inside of the hostel is always warm like spring even in cold winter and hot summer.
For them, the hostel is not a mere place for sleeping and having a meal.
After work, they spend a good time while reading books, singing songs or doing exercises in the hostel. A noticeable thing is that there is a cooking practice room where the future housewives can acquire cooking skills as they prepare different foods by themselves.
On holidays and Sundays, the dwellers hold a “cooking contest” at the practice room.
Pak Su Jong, a staffer of the mill, said that the girls have polished up their culinary skills so remarkably that they make various foods in a moment, adding their skills are on a par with professional cooks.
Yun Sol Gyong, a silk reeler who has been residing at the hostel since she was employed in the mill, said that she sent photos taken in her hostel room to her grandmother for a boast. “I will have my photo taken after being an innovator and send it to my grandma,” she added.
