In the DPRK that is in a golden age of construction, a new buzzword has been coined: “The looks of the country have changed yesterday and today, morning and evening.”
The country has literally undergone a sea change over the past nine years.
To cite Pyongyang as an example, new modern streets sprang up in succession, like Changjon, Mirae Scientists and Ryomyong streets, and lots of service facilities opened, such as the Ryugyong General Ophthalmic Hospital, Ryugyong Dental Hospital, Okryu Children’s Hospital, Munsu Water Park, Pyongyang Taedonggang Fish Restaurant, Daesong Department Store, Rungna People’s Recreation Ground and Rungna People’s Sports Park.
And along the banks of the Pothong River, modern structures were constructed or revamped, including the Pyongyang Municipal Sports Village, Pothonggang Department Store, Mirae Shop, Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum, Mansugyo Fish and Meat Shop and the concert hall of the Samjiyon Orchestra.
Other popular public amenities include the Amusement Park of the Kaeson Youth Park, Mirim Riding Club, Mirim Aviation Club, the floating restaurant Taedonggang and the general service ship Mujigae.
Transformation is not confined to the capital city of Pyongyang.
Samjiyon in a northern alpine region of the country turned into a standard of modern mountainous city and an ideal land of socialism, and the Kosan Combined Fruit Farm, Masikryong Ski Resort, Yangdok Hot Spring Resort and other farms, villages and holiday centres that were newly built across the country showcase the level of civilization of the Korean people.
Disaster-stricken areas in the provinces of North and South Hwanghae, Kangwon and North and South Hamgyong have taken on new appearances beyond recognition in a matter of a few months, notably Kangbuk-ri of Kumchon County and Taechong-ri of Unpha County in North Hwanghae Province.
The looks of the country will undergo even more changes with the completion of the Pyongyang General Hospital, Tanchon Power Station, other major construction projects and the building of houses in afflicted areas.
Such changes in the country are bringing about the other change.
